A spec that works for a human engineer often doesn't work for an AI coding agent.
Human engineers read between the lines. They ask clarifying questions. They make judgment calls based on years of experience. They know when a requirement is ambiguous and what the PM probably meant.
AI coding agents don't do any of that. They take what you give them and build exactly what you described. If the description is vague, the output is vague. If the edge cases aren't specified, they're not handled. If the success criteria aren't clear, the agent doesn't know when it's done.
An agent-ready spec is a spec written specifically so that Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot can execute it without asking clarifying questions. It's structured, unambiguous, and complete.
Why traditional PRDs don't work
Most PRDs are written for humans. They assume shared context. They describe the "what" and leave the "how" to engineering. They use phrases like "intuitive UX" and "fast performance" without defining what those mean.
That worked when a senior engineer was going to read the PRD, think about it, ask three questions in a Slack thread, and then build something reasonable. The PRD was a starting point for a conversation.
AI coding agents don't have conversations. They have context windows. Everything they need to know has to be in the prompt or the files they can access. If it's not there, they'll make something up — and it probably won't be what you wanted.
An agent-ready spec replaces the conversation. It answers the questions the agent would have asked, before it asks them.
What makes a spec agent-ready
An agent-ready spec has six components:
1. Clear scope. What's in, what's out. Not "improve the onboarding flow" but "add an email verification step after signup that blocks access to the dashboard until verified." Specific enough that there's no ambiguity about what the agent should build.
2. User stories with acceptance criteria. Each user story should describe a specific user action and what should happen. "As a new user, when I sign up with a valid email, I should receive a verification email within 60 seconds." The acceptance criteria tell the agent how to know when it's done.
3. Edge cases. What happens if the email is invalid? What happens if the user clicks the verification link twice? What happens if the link expires? Human engineers think through these. Agents don't unless you tell them to.
4. Technical constraints. Which database to use. Which API endpoints to create. Which existing patterns to follow. If you don't specify, the agent will make choices — and they might not be the choices you'd make.
5. Success metrics. How will you know this feature is working? Not just "users can verify their email" but "verification rate above 80% within 24 hours of signup." This helps the agent understand what matters and can inform logging and analytics decisions.
6. Tracking plan. What events should be logged? What properties should they have? This is often forgotten in traditional PRDs and added later. For agents, it needs to be upfront.
An example
Here's a traditional PRD requirement:
"Add email verification to the signup flow. Users should verify their email before accessing the app."
Here's the same requirement, agent-ready:
Feature: Email verification for new signups
Scope: Add email verification step after signup. Users cannot access /dashboard until email is verified. Applies to new signups only, not existing users.
User stories:
- As a new user, when I complete signup, I see a "Check your email" screen with my email address displayed and a "Resend" button.
- As a new user, when I click the verification link in my email, I'm redirected to /dashboard and see a success toast.
- As a new user, if I try to access /dashboard before verifying, I'm redirected to the verification pending screen.
Edge cases:
- Invalid/malformed email at signup: Show inline error, don't send verification email.
- Verification link clicked after expiry (24 hours): Show "Link expired" message with button to request new link.
- Verification link clicked twice: Second click shows "Already verified" and redirects to dashboard.
- Resend clicked more than 3 times in 10 minutes: Show rate limit message.
Technical constraints:
- Use existing email service (Resend) via /lib/email.ts
- Store verification token in User table, add emailVerified boolean and emailVerificationToken string fields
- Follow existing auth patterns in /app/auth/
Success metrics:
- Verification rate > 80% within 24 hours
- Resend rate < 20%
- Support tickets about verification < 5/week
Tracking:
- signup_completed: { userId, email, timestamp }
- verification_email_sent: { userId, timestamp }
- verification_email_clicked: { userId, timestamp, expired: boolean }
- verification_completed: { userId, timestamp, timeToVerify: seconds }
The second version is longer. It's also buildable. An AI coding agent can read this and produce working code without asking what you meant.
Where agent-ready specs come from
The best agent-ready specs are generated, not written from scratch.

Even a well-written spec has limits. The agent still might have questions. What's the current priority? What decisions have been made about the auth system? What did customers actually say about this feature?
MCP — the Model Context Protocol — lets agents query a product intelligence platform in real time. Instead of everything being in the spec, the spec can reference external context that the agent can look up while building.
This changes the spec from a static document to a live connection. The agent can ask "what are the related signals for this feature?" and get an answer. It can check "has anything been decided about error handling for auth?" before making a choice.
Agent-ready specs plus MCP is the full picture. The spec provides structure and scope. MCP provides context and memory.
Writing agent-ready specs yourself
If you're writing specs manually, here's the checklist:
- Can someone unfamiliar with your product understand exactly what to build?
- Are all edge cases explicitly listed?
- Are technical constraints specified, not assumed?
- Are success metrics measurable and specific?
- Is there a tracking plan with event names and properties?
- Is the scope clearly bounded — what's in and what's out?
If you can answer yes to all six, your spec is probably agent-ready. If not, the agent will fill in the gaps with guesses — and you'll spend more time fixing the output than you saved generating it.
The bottom line
AI coding agents are fast. What slows them down is vague input. An agent-ready spec is the difference between "generate a first draft I'll have to rewrite" and "generate working code I can ship."
The investment in writing better specs pays off immediately. And as agents get more capable, the teams with better specs will pull further ahead.
